The Filó Project lets you build cladograms from answer sheets or a character matrix. Our mascot has already helped create 310 phylogenetic trees! Choose how you’d like to begin.

The Filó Project is a free online tool designed to support teaching Evolution and Phylogenetic Systematics at both K–12 and university levels. It lets you build cladograms automatically—by typing a data matrix or uploading a photo of an answer sheet—bringing theory and practice together in an accessible way for students and teachers. Developed at the Laboratory of Geosciences and Paleontology of the Federal University of Piauí (LGP/UFPI), Filó aims to make learning about life’s evolutionary history more interactive and intuitive.
Why Filó the cat? Because cats climb trees—because they can.

Current version: 1.0 (October 2025).
Technologies used: Linux server (virtual machine) with Apache. Database: MariaDB. Website built with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP. Cladograms computed in Python using the branch-and-bound algorithm.
Programming: Prof. Dr. Daniel Fortier (LGP/UFPI).
Answer Sheet Upload
The construction will be done automatically based on the photo of the answer sheet..
Download the answer sheet template: 4 per page or 2 per page. Instructions here. Tip: laminate the answer sheet so you can reuse it many times!Matrix Builder
